[KCON:TACT 2020] Winning an Interview with GFRIEND, Dancing with Sowon, and My Wi-Fi Betraying Me
2020 was supposed to be another legendary year for KCON, but with the world turning upside down, everything changed. Instead of the usual arena-filled, idol-packed madness, we were introduced to KCON:TACT, the first-ever fully virtual KCON experience.
I’ll be honest—I was skeptical at first. How could anything replace the energy of a real-life KCON? No barricade moments, no Hi-Touches, no crowds singing together? But little did I know, KCON:TACT 2020 would give me one of the most surreal and unforgettable KCON experiences of my life.
Because not only did I get to meet GFRIEND, but I also won a fan interview, got a 1:1 video call, showed Sowon my cutout of her, danced with the members… and then had my Wi-Fi betray me in the worst way possible.
🎟️ The KCON:TACT Experience – Virtual, But Still Magical
KCON:TACT tried to recreate the full KCON experience online, with virtual live stages, meet & greets, fan interactions, and exclusive content. While it definitely wasn’t the same as screaming my lungs out in an arena, the production quality, artist engagement, and special moments still made it a dream event for any K-pop fan stuck at home.
And let’s talk about the craziest part—I somehow ended up as an audience member on the MAIN SCREEN for Everglow, was placed in the pending location section for Mamamoo, and even spotted myself in the top right audience screen for SF9. I wasn’t just watching KCON:TACT from home—I was basically inside it.
But the biggest highlight of all? My 1:1 video call with GFRIEND.
💬 1:1 Video Call with GFRIEND – The Moment I Couldn’t Believe Was Real
GFRIEND was one of my favorite groups, so when I found out that I had WON A SPOT in their 1:1 video call, I lost my mind. Actually talking to them, even virtually, was something I never thought would happen.
And then… Sowon said "I love you too."
I REPEAT: Sowon. Said. "I love you too." To me.
I have no idea how I survived that moment, but I do know that my soul left my body. Hearing those words come straight from one of my ultimate biases felt like the ultimate K-pop fan dream come true.
And it didn’t stop there—I even showed Sowon my cutout of her, and the reaction was priceless. She laughed, pointed at the screen, and gave me the sweetest smile. The other members giggled and reacted, and for a second, I thought this might be the peak moment of my K-pop life.
💃 Dancing with GFRIEND – Almost the Best Moment Ever… Until My Wi-Fi Had Other Plans
Then came the moment that WAS SUPPOSED TO BE PERFECT—we all started dancing together.
I mean, IMAGINE. I was literally dancing with GFRIEND. Me. Dancing. With. GFRIEND.
I could see Yuju and Yerin laughing, SinB hyping us up, and Sowon actually acknowledging my existence again. My soul had left my body at this point.
But then…
🚨 My Wi-Fi decided to betray me.
One second I was living every ONCE’s dream, the next, my screen froze.
I was frantically pressing every button, panicking like my life depended on it. I could still hear them in the background, but my video was completely gone.
By the time my connection came back, I had missed the rest of the segment.
They had moved on. The moment was gone. I had literally been dancing with GFRIEND, and my Wi-Fi snapped me out of existence like I was in an alternate K-pop Endgame.
😭 The Aftermath – A Painful, Yet Hilarious Memory
At first, I was devastated. I sat there staring at my dead Wi-Fi router, questioning every life choice that led me to this moment.
But then, I realized… HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN SAY THEY EVEN GOT TO DO THIS?
I still had my short but sweet moment with Sowon and my cutout, I still got to interact with GFRIEND, and even though my Wi-Fi ruined my perfect K-pop moment, I’ll always have the memory of what could have been.
🏆 Final Thoughts: KCON:TACT Was Unexpectedly Iconic
While KCON:TACT 2020 could never fully replace the magic of a real-life KCON, it still gave fans some truly unforgettable experiences. The one-on-one interactions, the performances, and the global accessibility made it a unique and special event.
And for me? I’ll never forget winning an interview with GFRIEND, dancing with them (for a brief, glorious moment), seeing myself on screen during Everglow, Mamamoo, and SF9’s performances, and experiencing the ultimate betrayal of bad Wi-Fi at the worst possible time.
If we ever get another virtual KCON experience, I just have one request—please, someone sponsor me with high-speed internet next time.
Final Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 for GFRIEND, 0/5 for my Wi-Fi)
